Commandant Air Cadets Carries Out Lees Trophy Inspection

This evening found 148 (Barnsley) Squadron in the company of Air Commodore McCafferty for the final inspection of the Lees Trophy. The Squadron are the North Region representatives and we are very proud to have hosted the Commandant this evening.

The Commandant was escorted all night by two cadets at opposing ends of their cadet careers, Cadet Warrant Officer Heather Williams who will age out in January and Cadet Jamie Butler who has just started his cadet career.

The night included a full formal parade and inspection, followed by a full demonstration of the activities our cadets take part in.

We covered a lot of areas this evening, but notable ones were the band demonstration where the Commandant played the cymbals with the Squadron band. The Arms Continuity Drill display which was created by the cadets to mixed styles of music. The First Aid demonstration where the Commandant allowed the cadets to bandage her. The Mountain Bike demonstration with a mystery rider. Also the Commandant learning the rules and competing in a Boccia Tournament, refereed by the cadets. The Commandant also enjoyed a flight in our simulator, where she scored very highly, on this occasion beating the score of the Regional Commandant. I feel a re-match on the horizon.

Other areas were displayed and discussed with the Commandant including Fencing, Flying opportunities, Parade for the Queen, Boccia, Parades, Archery, DofE, AT, Radio, First Aid, Aeromodelling, Mountain Biking expedition and cycle display, Shooting and CVQO.

Several presentations were made on the final parade including;

Flt Lt Harrison – 10th Year Nijmegen Marching Medal Wg Cdr (Rtd) Rogers – Chief of Air Staff Certificate CI Mandy Colton – Commandants Certificate of Meritorious Service Four bronze and two silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards certificates. Promotions – One new cadet Flight Sergeant, three new cadet Sergeants and five new Corporals

We presented the Commandant with a fun certificate of the activities she undertook this evening, a Squadron cake and a bunch of forever flowers. Also Flt Lt Harrison presented the Commandant with the South and West Yorkshire Wing team medal and team brassard from Nijmegen.

We were very pleased to welcome the dignitaries, VIP’s, Region and Wing staff that came to support us tonight.

Lastly we have been really spoilt with a fantastic buffet and some sweet Yorkshire puddings. Thanks to the civ com members and staff that not only created this great spread, but served the evening so diligently.

Our thanks go to the Commandant and the reviewing team for coming to visit us, especially when the commandant wasn’t too well. Good luck to all in the competition as I know we have all worked hard to be in the final six and are all winners.

Spectemur Agendo 148.
